It Is Motivating to Belong to a Group?

As we all know, since senior year is coming to and end, most of us are having difficulty making ourselves do homework or study for a test. It seems now more than earlier, that some people are putting things off to the very last minute.
The article I found asks if it's motivating to belong to a group. Do you think working in groups motivates you? Or are you better working alone? Are you a procrastinator, and if you aren't, what do you do to get your work done on time?

  2. One of my least favorite things is working in a group. I'm always more motivated to get things done when I work alone. Since I know my schedule best, I always set aside time in order to work on something whether it's a paper or a project. I also feel that the project is a direct reflection of myself, and am more motivated to make it look its best than waiting till the last minute. I can be a procrastinator sometimes, however in order to make sure I do my work on time, I always write down exactly everything I need to do that way I never forget.

  3. I have to agree with Stefanie-- I absolutely detest working in groups. This is mostly because of the horrors I've had to deal with working in groups when I was in middle school; now I'm just automatically repulsed to them. I know I'm better when I work alone because I know I can rely on myself to get the job done and done correctly. I complete my best work - as crazy as it sounds - when I'm under pressure. I don't make a habit out of doing so, but usually I don't mind waiting until the night before to do certain things because I know I'll always get them done well, regardless. There are times when of course I'm just simply a procrastinator. Despite the many ways I go about completing work, however, I enjoy having the free will to decide when to do it, and how. Like Amber also mentions, working with friends can be very difficult because no matter what, you will be distracted. I've found the one thing that really motivates me is if I'm interested in the subject material. Even now, with senioritis and warm weather popping up, I feel the need to study hard and focus on the information because I like learning about it.

  4. I think that working in a group has both pros and cons. The group dynamics really determines how I am personally motivated. Due to the fact that we have been in school together for the past four years, I'd say we each are able to recognize what kind of worker one another is in a group and if they will pick up their slack. Sometimes if I find myself in a group where I feel like I have a better handle on the material I tend to be more motivated than if I were to be in a group where I felt inferior intellectually. When there is the option to work alone as opposed to in a group, I will opt to work alone. That way I am the only person responsible for the material and I don't get stuck doing the entire project or holding the group back if I don't do my part. I think I am a procrastinator with certain things. Because I have ADHD and am medicated, I think that has a lot to do with my ability to get my work done. I do find myself procrastinating even while I am on my medication because even though it makes me focus, it doesn't always mean that the medication forces me to focus on the things I need to do first.

  5. I think that working in a group is actually worse because it's easier to get off topic and talk about more fun exciting things like prom and spring break. Even though I procrastinate I prefer to do it alone because even though I'm putting it off I'm still getting more done than if I was in a group of friends.

  6. Personally, I think I work better by myself than with a group, especially if the group involves friends since it's easy to get off topic like Taylor mentioned. I find that when i sit down by myself and approach work without any distractions I'm able to get the most done, whereas if I'm in a group I tend to get sidetracked more easily. I don't tend to procrastinate too much with day-to-day homework, but I almost always leave long term projects and assignments to the last minute. Now that it's getting closer to summertime and the year is almost over, I find that I'm procrastinating more than usual and have to keep myself more focused in order to complete everything on time.

  7. I personally hate working in groups, only because I am usually the one to take charge. While I can't really blame anyone else for this, I still always feel like the workloads are unequal. When people work in groups, things usually get done in a more timely fashion, but the amount of planning required isn't worth it. I find that it's easier to work alone, even if I do procrastinate, because I tend to work better under pressure and know my own skills better than anyone else. Having to compensate for others and organize three or four girls' schedules simply to coordinate is more of a hassle than working under pressure due to my own procrastination.

  8. I think that working in groups depends on which class you are in. If it is a more challenging class then I prefer working in groups because you have your group members who may have better insight than you. It is also a way to grasp the information better because you may have someone in the group who can explain it thoroughly than you would be able to understand on your own. On the other hand there are certain classes which I do not like working in groups. If it is an easier class and I understand what is going on I find it trivial to need to do a group project. That is where I find I goof off more because I know it is an easy class so we can all hang out and pull it together at the last minute. I find that in most groups there is always one person who does not put in the equal amount of work but usually get the same grade. There are pros and cons to it but I can say that generally I am indifferent to it.

  9. I think that whether or not working in groups is motivating definitely depends on the type of people in the group with you. I tend to be a procrastinator, and I know that if I work in a group with people who are productive and focused and want to get things done, it can help me, but if I work with someone who is talkative and easily distracted and distracting, it is harder for me to get things done than it would for me to just do it on my own. I also think that the personalities of the people you work with have a great impact, because if there is even one person who needs to do everything or one person who refuses to do any work, the balance of the group is thrown off. Although there are times when everyone in the group does equal work, these times are extremely rare and only occur when everyone has the same understanding and brings the same amount to the table.

  10. I am a huge procrastinator. I think they wrote the line "why do today what you can put off til tomorrow for" me. Of course I find it easier to do the work for the classes I enjoy but when that is not the case I have to work harder to get motivated. I do think that working in a group makes it easier for me to get my work done. Often if I am in a group I feel pressured to not procrastinate. When there was the blackout in October, I stayed at Jess' house for a week. Just being with her we both got our homework done way faster. I felt like I didn't want to slow her down and she probably felt the same. Neither of us wanted to be the last to finish, we wanted to keep the same pace and it led us to have no time to procrastinate.

  11. I've always loved group projects. Fortunately for me, I've always been in groups where everyone does their share of the work. I can imagine how frustrating it would be for me if members of my group didn't do any of their part and if I were in that situation i'm sure that I would be turned off from group projects after that point. However, when you're not doing a project and just studying for a test I think that working in groups can be very beneficial. The group can discuss a topic that maybe some people are not confident about and so the members can receive many different study tips and outlooks on that topic. I am definitely motivated to do better on a test when I study for it with my friends because I know that I am capable to do as well as them if that's the case. I am also a big procrastinator and I think that studying in groups helps me to actually get the work done.

  12. I procrastinate when I work on my own, but I feel that working in a group is motivating. When working alone, if you fail to do your own work, the only one who suffers is you. Working in a group I feel like if I don't do my share of the work on time I'm letting several people down and hurting their grades, which is not fair. Working alone is easier because, like some classmates said, it is distracting or sometimes the workloads are unequal, however I think if I want to complete everything in a quick and timely fashion a group is the best setting

  13. When working alone, I procrastinate a lot, but in a group, I pick a date, two or three days before the assignment is due and I get it done by then. However in most of my group projects I had a group that procrastinated, a lot. So I did a lot of big projects for the most part by myself.
I do get frustrated when someone in my group messes up and our grade as a whole suffers because of it. So I always feel inclined to work hardest in group projects where my grades could effect others. I work very well alone and tend to get less distracted with socializing (facebook can only distract for about 20 mins, a person could distract me for hours!).
When I do get ahead in my work, I usually just wind up enjoying a well needed nap.

  14. Working in groups is more motivating because you have other people relying on you and you don't want to come off as a slacker to them. I think working in a group affects your reputation so if you sit there and do nothing they may not like you or think your lazy. I don't think its better to work alone because there is noone else is affected by the work you are doing. Working alone only effects you and noone will ever know that you waiting till the last minute to do something. I am definitely a procrastinator. I have no desire to get more work dont ahead of time unless i have other people who are relying on it to be done. I feel working in a group gets more accomplished while working on your own can be less satisfying.

  15. I think that working in a group has its benefits but also its bumps. When one is in a group they are more likely to slack off because they believe that someone else will be able to pick up their work. Also one may become more distracted because their are people to talk to. However, group work can be helpful because their a more ideas and different opinions to look at. I play volleyball which is a team sport. I definitely love playing volleyball but having to rely on 5 other people is hard. Its easy to see when someone messes up but being part of a team you have to learn to pick each other up. I am the definition of a procrastinator.

  16. Honestly, working in groups does not motivate me, it actually annoys me because usually I get stuck doing all of the work some how. Like others may have said, working in groups may possibly not motivate you because you know that if you don't do any work for the group someone will take over in order for them to get that good grade. They also may not be motivated because they rely on others to do some of the work. I personally like working alone because I don't have to rely on others that won't do their part in the project. I am not a procrastinator only because I don't have time to procrastinate! By the time I get home from track, shower, and eat dinner its already six pm and start my homework immediately so I can go to sleep before eleven.

  17. In a sense I think it is motivating to be in a group, you have people to back you up, share common interests with and have support. This parallels the violating a social norm, because without a group of people behind you, it suddenly becomes difficult to be the "odd" one. Working in groups is another story though, I find that when I work alone I have less distractions around me and therefore my time is spent more productively. I also try not to procrastinate because I hate cramming for tests, or being short on time. This alone with the anxiety that comes with procrastination helps motivate me.

  19. I do think that working in a group helps me to a certain extent. When I work in a group, I usually am really motivated if the people in my group are motivated to work. I will get work done because I know that I am working with overachievers and I need to put my best foot forward. A group also helps to motivate a person and keep them going when the times get hard. When working alone, I usually procrastinate a lot more than I do when I work in a group. When I am working alone, I know that I have to complete everything on my own, so it doesn't matter when I actually do something but when i am working in a group, I can't let the whole group down by not completing something on time. I am a procrastinator and this something that I am trying to get over.
